In 1967, Bobbie Gentry released her legendary record “Ode to Billy Joe”. On that album is a song entitled “Bugs” and it laments the harsh realities of growing up and dealing with the ever-present pests of the Mississippi Delta. The second verse of that song has the opening line “Got Boll Weevils in your cotton…”
Brian’s father had always referred to him lovingly with the nickname Bo. So when it came time to choose a stage name for his burgeoning solo blues gigs in Atlanta, Brian turned to that song for inspiration. The Boll Weevil has historic importance in the lives of the southern farmers in the early 1900’s and many songs exist extolling its impact. By simply dropping the two “L’s”, the moniker Bo Weevil was born.
Almost 30 years later, Bo Weevil lives on in ten all-original albums that encapsulate true Americana – a blend of country, rock, folk, singer-songwriter and blues.
